Tutus and Tiaras abound at the movies

The Dance on Camera Festival at Lincoln Center in NYC is celebrating its 40^th anniversary this year.  The festival runs from January 27-January 31 2012 at the Walter Reade Theater and the Elinor Munroe Film Center.  Dance on Camera Festival presents a wide range of independently made documentaries, short films, features and even animation.

This year’s selections included films on Paris Opera Ballet, Makarova and a film on ballroom dancers restricted to wheelchairs.  The festival brings a variety of work that is uplifting, inspiring, and provocative.  It also is a tremendous opportunity for the masses to enjoy dance at a heavily discounted rate as compared to the market prices of a ticket to see dance performed live in NYC theaters.

As a former member of the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago, even I could gain knowledge from attending the festival and viewing “Joffrey: Mavericks of American Dance”.  This film on Joffrey was the first documentary produced and the story of its founders is premiering its story in the Dance on Camera Festival this year.  

These dance films are definitely worth a view, whether the viewer is a balletomane or a dance rookie, the festival offers something for everyone to enjoy.
